Character History:
Born to a tennis pro and a successful lawyer, Ryoma has always known two things: success and tennis. He didn't care for the latter for a long time, but the former was a value instilled into him since infancy and he could not ignore the desire to be successful in something, nor could he ignore the father who always goaded him. Tennis became his life simply because he was good and there was nothing else for him. But he had no desire to truly play, for the longest time; he only wanted to beat his father, show the man he was good at something, and then he was going to give up the game. It didn't matter to Ryoma that he had devoted his entire life to the game, and honestly had nothing else: without tennis, Ryoma would just be another boy, good in nothing and destined to lead a life that would bore even the most optimistic of people.
It wasn't until Ryoma moved to Japan, discovered a team that welcomed him, a captain to show ignite a flame under him, and opponents who he had to improve when facing, or else risk losing, that he realized tennis was simply more than a means to an end. It was a game, one that could be enjoyed, and a serious business, one that had ever right to consume his life, or so Echizen thought. He still needed to work on balancing a social life with tennis, but since he had a team that he could get along with, it's become much easier.
Echizen was never the most social of people, which is why his parents are both pleased that he's discovered such a great team and friends. He's an only child, and the center of his parents' world, despite his father's goading and teasing. His parents had made the decision to move to Japan mainly for Ryoma, although it did help his mother's career.
There are constant debates in the Echizen household, though, over Ryoma. His mother wants him to finish high school and college before going pro, and his father wants him to go pro as soon as he possibly can. There's no question of Ryoma going pro or not going pro, and even Echizen doesn't think about it, unless asked if there is anything else he'd rather do, and usually that only involves a second of thought before he responds with "no". He hates the debates, because they make him think, and most of the time wishes to not hear them. He's only 12, he has years to go before deciding on if he should finish high school and college or go pro when he turns 16. That's one reason why he is really happy about going to a tennis school: it means he won't have to think about it for a long time.
But the biggest reason he likes the idea of a tennis school is the main purpose: tennis. He knows there will be other strong players around him and he can't wait for matches to begin. Ryoma has taken words to heart, and is determined to become stronger, faster, better.
Character Personality:
Echizen is viewed as being a cold-hearted brat by most people. He doesn't talk unless directly spoken to, unless he is with people he likes or is sticking up for people. And with his tone of voice, most people get the wrong idea of him. Not that Echizen cares; he isn't one to be concerned with public opinion. Ecizen's got a heart of gold, though, beneath his frosty exterior, and he'll stand up, in his own way, for the people he cares about and he enjyos spending time with his friends, even if he doesn't know what to say half of the time. After not having many friends in America, it's hard for him to adjust to having friends in Japan, and often, he'll keep things to himself, not sure about boundaries with other people. He tends to be dense when it comes to things like emotions and girls, but he's still young, only 12, and traumatized by his father's neverending supply of porn.
